PLANNING

This page is to help those preparing to go on one of our trips. We spend weeks or even months menu planning, buying and gathering supplies, dehydrating and preparing food and taking care of other logistics before each trip! All you have to do is pack your sleeping bag!

What You Should Bring and How to Pack

Less is more! Most have a tendancy to over pack. Since we provide all the common gear (and some shared personal items) all you need to worry about is staying warm and dry. You can do this with two changes of clothes. One for paddling and another for camping. We attempt to dry out paddling clothes over night. Under no circumstanses do we wear our camp clothes on the river! It's better to put on damp clothes in the morning than to not have anything dry to wear at night. Of course on early Spring and late Fall trips we do what we can to stay dry while paddling.

You should roll your camping clothes and a small baggie with your hygene items into your sleeping bag and then stuff it into a hefty trash bag squeezing all the air out. The bag should be big enough to allow you to tie the bag into a knot closing it up. Double bagging will help ensure water proof. When holes develop we just replace it with extra bags we brought!

Please Bring:

  • Sleeping Bag*: A warm sleeping bag is an absolute must! Tempatures even in the July can get as low as 45 degrees F. Early Spring and Late Fall can see freezing tempatures! I bring a Brittish down army bag I found at an army surpluss store at a reasonable cost. Big bulky bags from Target can beplenty warm but may not pack down to small size well. We need to get three persons gear into one #4 Duluth pack. If you are going to spend money on anything, this would be it.
  • Sleeping Pad*: This used to be something I would recommend not bringing. However I think it is required for anyone over age 30! Plus it adds a lot of warmth as your body loses more heat from the cold ground than the air. The auto inflate kind sold at camping stores or foam mats works well. They normally get tied to the outside of the Duluth pack.
  • 2 Pairs of Pants or Shorts: I wear wool military pants around camp and some old jeans or shorts on the river. If particularly early or late season I'll bring two pairs of wool pants. You can get by with just cotton jeans in Summer.
  • 2 Long Sleeve Shirts: Wool works best. A Cotton sweatshirt works fine as well.
  • 2 T-Shirts: Cotton is fine. One can be long sleeved.
  • 2 Jackets : A medium weight wool or fleece jacket and a light weight wind breaker.
  • 1 Pair Long Johns: Can be used for sleeping in Summer and added warmth Spring and Fall.
  • 4 Pairs of Socks. Two should be wool. I'll sometimes wear 100% wool over cotton socks. 20% cotton/80% wool blend also works. Wool socks on the river in cold weather is important since wool maintains most it's warmth even when wet. A bice big pair of wool "tent socks" that stays dry will be blessing if you get cold feet at night!
  • 3 Pairs of Underwear. You don't need eight pairs of underwear on a wilderness trip! You need one for the river, one for at night and a spare. That way you can wash and dry a set if required.
  • 2 Pairs of Foot Wear. There are many things that will work fine. Beech shoes or sandles are an exception. You've been warned. I wear an old pair of tennis on the river over my wool socks and hiking boots around camp.
  • Head Protection: You won't need a helmet for class 2 and 3 rapids but you will want something for sun, rain and cold temps! I bring a canvas brimmed hat and a wool head band in the Spring and Fall. A bandanna or two is helpful on hot days.
  • Eye Wear: Contacts and saline or prescription glasses if you need them. Sun glasses are nice for the evening rush hour rapids!
  • A Rain Poncho*: Some will want to bring high tech and expensive "dry suits". I prefer cheap 99 cent poncho's or even a garbage bag with arms cut out. But then I like the rain and don't mind being cold and damp sometimes. Makes drying out by the fire that much more rewarding!
  • Sun Screen and/or Lotion*: We will cary some in our first aid kit but it's best if you are responsible for your own skin protection. Hands often get very chapped and need moisturizer. But don't count on your mother reminding you to put it on! Unless you bring her like I do sometimes. Really!
  • Hygiene Items: A small zip lock bag with toothbrush and paste, a bar of soap, comb, sanitary napkins, etc. Razor is optional. Biodegradable is nice but not required.
  • Prescription Drugs: If you are taking meds prescribed by a doctor you are responsible for bring and administrating them yourself! We will have over the counter meds for the most common ailments.

Optionally Bring:

  • Paddle*: We provide aluminum / plastic paddles which do the job nicely. However, your paddle and you will become one after about 10,000 strokes. Nothing feels as good as wood. Pick out a straight paddle of the proper length. It should reach from the floor to your nose. Stick with a straight shaft and avoid the bent variety.
  • Life Vest*: Again we will provide the "May West" standard orange type. They are the safest but also can be uncomfortable. You may wish to bring your own.
  • Gloves: You should be okay most of the time without gloves but you may wish you had some late Fall or early Spring! This is the one item where I might go hight tech and buy Neoprene gloves made for canoeing. Work gloves are not a bad idea for chopping and cutting wood.
  • Small Towel*: Most ot the time I prefer to drip dry or share a towel with the group.
  • Swim Wear: I normally just jump in with my river clothes or go totally natural when bathing. Nobody is going to say anything either way. "We had both brought swimsuits, but they seem a little ridiculous, and in the confines of a small tent, any pretense of modesty had evaporated days ago. ... It had snowed yesterday and there was ice still floating in the river four days ago, so we have no illusions that this is going to be a warm bath ... To this point, bathing has been almost unthinkable. Ice water, cold winds, tiny, barrenland cooking fires and fatigue weighed heavily against the need. The need is strong. Dragging the canoe on the ice, portaging and bursts of vigorous paddling precipitate profuse sweating. At first there is a desire to wash, but soon the cold wind dries the sweat, leaving a faint, greasy residue and the feeling is grubby but comfortable." -- Rob Kesselring, Daughter Father Canoe.
  • Pillow: A small camp pillow is alright. A clothes ball works about as good. Sorry, we won't have enough pack space for fullsize pillows!
  • Flash light, batteries, extra bulb*: I prefer that we share a lantern and one or two flash lights for the group. Two many adds clutter and light polution to the camp site. If you bring one consider a small keychain variety.
  • Compass: You really won't need this. It might be fun but mostly ads clulter and another item to get lost.
  • Insect Repellant*: Early Spring you will see few flying insects and late Fall (after frost) you will be hard press to see a single flying insect. Summer trips they can be a problem during parts of the day. We or somebody in the group should have plenty to share however.
  • Insect Head Net*: I have never used one of these. There was only one trip I might have used one if I had it. The cheap over the hat variety works best as they can be scrunched up tucked into you hat if need be.
  • Pocket Knife:*: Useful for spreading peanut butter, and cutting salomi. But we'll have one or two to share.
  • Matches or Lighter:*: Of course we will remember to bring these. At least one per day! Bringing them is just added peace of mind. Or you have to have them for your smokes. There won't be designated smoking areas. Everyone will smell like a camp fire by day 2 anyway.
  • Mug on a String*: Nice to have handy for mid morning coffee on the river or swigs of water, tea or cool aid in the afternoon! But we will have cups everyone and could easily be done without.
  • Paper, Pencil*: Keeping a journal is a great way to keepsake the trip. Plus we can burn it in a pinch!
  • Camera, Binoculars: Some people love these things. Personally I think they are a nusence and can take away from the over all natural experience. But I might have to bring a water proof disposable just so I can put a picture or two on this site however
  • Fishing Stuff: I don't know anything about fishing so you are on your own here. Some trip leaders may however and make occasional fishing stops. After dinner and before breakfast there should always be time if you have the energy. Your milage will vary.

* We may be able to provide you with these items. Call if unsure.

Please Do Not Bring:

  • Snacks or Drinks: We have worked hard to put together a menu everyone will enjoy vegan or non. If you must bring something be prepared to share with the group. Call if you have special dietary needs.
  • Radios: We are tring to get away from civilization, why bring it with us? We brought one once on a Sept 12, 2001 trip ... just to follow the World Trade Center attack.
  • Phones: We might bring one for emergencies but probably not. Unlike Canada we are generally not more than a half a day from getting help. Leave your cell at home or in your car.
  • Watches or Alarm Clocks: I feel strongly that watches do not belong on vacation, especially in the wilderness. You'll be more fully immersed by watching the sun.
  • Propane Lanterns: We normally don't bring propane of any kind. Collecting wood and cooking on an open fire is a lot more fun. Plus propane and mantels, glass can be such a headache. To be fair, there was one cold mid-October trip that somebody brought one and I despite the problems I was glad we had it.
  • GPS: Why?
  • Anything you don't want to lose or keep nice: Things will get lost, dirty and destroyed. It's best to bring inexpensive items.

The Menu (updated 4/15/06)

Here we detail our menu for our next trip. It helps us organize whats remaining to prepare and pack. You, our customer need not worry about it. Just enjoy!

Packing the food is fairly scientific. We pack each meal seperately and label and color code dinners from breakfasts. All Lunches/ Snacks will share one or two bags. Drink Mixes and Miscellaneous another. Finally all Deserts will share a bag.

Before going in the "meal bag" all dry goods including spices are pre-measured and double bagged. Oils, syrups and such are sometimes divided up and put in plastic. Other times they are just put in with Miscellaneous.

As we finalize each meal bag we will update the Status column as "Sealed" or "Complete".

The following is for 4 - 6 persons for 8 days.
